Sliding into the future (2020) and the slow downhill to 40 with something that kids of my jaded gen once called a "banger" courtesy of New York's quirk-pop-turned-nursery-rapper Leyla Blue. Here she trades all the anthemic qualities of last year's teasing three-track release, Songs For Boys That Didn't Text Me Back, for a more playful approach, punctuated by the perfectly brain-sticking opening stanza where she swaggers ("I know that I look good and yeah I heard that sexy sells") from a reflective opening line (repurposed as the title of this wee blug post) to the ultimate Y2k Part 2 diss ("y'all a bunch of fucking Dells").
As a side, this praise isn't coupled with some Rap Dads stayin' relevant bullshit either. For one, I've successfully swerved my two-nager away from watching Peppa Pig, so the value here isn't in understanding all the references (is Charlotte her friend, owner, enemy?). That said, I reserve the right to throw down a million words at anyone who drops a Lotso diss track at any moment in the future. Incidentally, I got onto this track via nu-dad and (still relevant) tastemaker Shag and his evolving new music playlist. Do yourself a big 2020 favour.
