Closing out a quiet week with one I've been able to keep quiet about for a little bit.
Old mate (literally, in all imaginable ways, *winky slant*), ex-Youth Grouper/Community Radio boss and former work colleague, Cam Emerson-Elliot, has been slowly leaking this one across cubicles/message threads for a few seasons, first with info on meet-ups with particular personnel (Max from Songs, Pat from Vines), then a name (Victoria) and finally some evidence of actual existence via private Soundcloud URLs of first drafts. One of which has now been publicised, polished up a bit and ready to accompany the band's official arrival announcement: "Pompeii".
A true sum of the Sydney trio's super-band parts — Max's elongated, deadpan tone, Cam and Pat's blend of intricate, subtle noodlin' and thunderous thrustin' — "Pompeii" masks it's subject matter (a messy band break-up, as the band explain) with the warm snug of half-in Flying Nun strums. Yet, as these things do, scruff of ya necks are yanked, and the one-sided exit interview and array of accompanying insults arise, with lasting impact: "if we needed you, we don't need you anymore."
Victoria are set to reveal themselves to the world on February 19th at Waywards in Sydney, sandwiched somewhere between Laura Imbruglia (launching her latest single "The Creeps") and another new music project, Stressless — which features Gus from Unity Floors and probably heaps of other people.
